The number two cause of death in children under 14 is swimming pool accidents.  A person of any age who is involved in a swimming pool accident can end up with medical conditions that can effect them for life.

There are many types of swimming pool accidents.  Injuries an include brain injuries or concussion, drowning, spinal cord injuries among others.  A person or company that operates a swimming pool is required to provide safety and security when it offers its swimming pool to friends, family or the public.  For example, proper warning signage needs to be clearly visible regarding the availability of life guards, the depth of the pool and so on.  In addition the pool owner must comply with regulations regarding fencing the pool and proper locks.  Importantly, an unused pool can also be a cause of injury or death and therefore must be securely covered.

It makes common sense, and is also a legal obligation, that in addition to the pool owner, all people in the vicinity of a swimming pool must conduct themselves appropriately, and must especially be observant of children who by their nature depend on adults for their safety.  Children enjoy swimming in a pool, but are too young and inexperienced to judge matters related to their safety.  For example, a young child cannot be expected to understand the depth of the pool, the dangers of a swimming pool or the limits of their skills in a water environment.  That is why children must always be supervised by one or more responsible adults, without exception.

Diving board accidents are another cause of swimming pool injury or deaths.  A owner of a swimming pool must take into consideration the additional risks a diving board presents when they offer their pool for use by others.  A diving board presents dangers for the diver and for people in the area of a diver when they enter the water.
